NO JOKE: a non-definitive discography.

declinedtostate:

my entire ‘Creative Commons’ ‘discography/oeuvre’ of music (I’ve made personally or been directly involved with) available to be downloaded for free via the Internet, organized semi-chronologically and/or by style or group/band.

I plan to continually update this as new work is completed.

Key:
Band: Title
[catalogue number/release date or year]
(vague genre-related descriptor)

Early Troubled By Insects

- Troubled By Insects: Develop Policy, Implement
[CTR001/2007]
(acoustic bedroom pop embarrassment)
- Troubled By Insects: Tape #0417
[CTR002/2008]
(one take lo-fi acoustic)
- Troubled By Insects: Halos Run
[CTR003/2009]
(slightly less embarrassing bedroom pop/noise)
- Troubled By Insects: Feel the Coarseness of Everything I Cannot See
[CTR007/2007]
(shit-ton of old embarrassing bedroom pop like finding old Bright Eyes demos that suck [sic])

Weirdo Noise-Punk Era

- Dance Danse Revulsion: Jug Jug to Dirt Years
[CTR004/2007]
(occasionally ‘inspired’ weirdo-punk jams recorded at a church, basically ~4 chords/song around phrases scrawled in the corners of my journals)
- Grumpy Old Grandfather: The Employees at My Post Office, They Have a Good Time
[CTR006/2008]
(an old roommate and I fucking around in-between trying to write ‘real’ songs, super noisy, bad drumming, like a demo of a
Transmission rehearsal but maybe even occasionally better)

Poppy-Pop Era

- The Blvd: Battle Rages/The Timing
[CTR005/2007]
(two songs I played lead guitar on for a short-lived band that I’m oddly proud of even though it’s cutesy & adorable as fuck)

Late(r) Troubled By Insects as Rock Project

- Troubled By Insects: Kaliphornya Girlsssss
[CTR013/2013]
(recorded 2008-09, a major part of the greater story-arc of current TBI work, took forever to release because I took so long compiling the awesome chapbook of work from contributing artists to go along with the EP)

Achievement House

- Achievement House: Volume One
[CTR008/2011]
(most legitimate foray into ‘indie rock’ and also ‘being a drummer,’ has over 13,000 downloads on the Internet Archive which I am pretty proud of, also the ‘Creature House’ song at the end was the most fun I’ve ever had playing a song live)
- Achievement House: Heart Archers
[2012]
(released after my leave with the band, but did all the drumming on it, have lots of ‘feels’ about this work)

Troubled By Insects as Experimental/Noise Outfit

- Troubled By Insects: Ariestocracy
[AV003/2012]
(gift for a friend’s birthday party I couldn’t attend, first time I databent a song into an image for album artwork)
- Troubled By Insects: a hundred tubes.
[AV002/2012]
(ambient/noise from YouTube samples, super long-player of a simple concept-as-sound-experiment)
- Troubled By Insects: boys don’t get this pretty w/out drugs (a xmas album)
[AV004/2012]
(realizing my desire to make an xmas album that is depressing and ‘difficult,’ almost every song has a 3+ minute noise outro just b/c)

The Blue van Meer Mystery Sequence (as Troubled By Insects)

- Blue van Meer [part I]
[AV001/10.2012]
(drone/ambience with contact mic experimentation & simple synth beats)
- Blue van Meer [part II]: live/wire(d)
[AV001.5/11.2012]
(live recordings while I was trying to figure out what it ‘means’ to be an ‘experimental/noise musician’)
- Blue van Meer [part III]: Love Lies Limp (Feigning Stately Dignity)
[AV005/01.2013]
(two long compositions introducing vocals b/c I can’t leave well enough alone)
- Blue van Meer [part IV]: semantic satiation
[AV006/03.2013]
(bringing all the pieces together so you can listen to them all fall apart)

Semi-documented Odds & Ends

I was a contributor to the Enemies List open-source black metal project Nahvalr [2008]; where my sounds are on the album, I couldn’t tell you.
- “Tambourine Halos” from Halos Run was featured on Holy Page Compilation 2011 [2011].
- I have a couple tapes of 1986 Bike Rally [2008ish] (a weirdo noise/punk supergroup of Fresno’s finest who—as the Rally—never received the public attention they never wanted) recordings still waiting to be digitized once I can figure out how to edit the parts where I accidentally recorded myself insulting other members of the group.
- My sister and I have recorded 2 albums under the name Siblings Asunder which I have as of yet to release online.
- Before a lot of this, there was The Scene Machine [2007ish], and if you look hard enough, you can find pretty much everything we did on YouTube or (heh) MySpace, but I won’t tell you where.

Finally:

I know I release everything under CC, but I could care less.

I’m not making any more or less money on these ventures.

I do this because I’m not much good at much else, and so am driven—

Fuck the CC and do with it what you will if you wish. #freeculture

Troubled By Insects - Kaliphornya Girlsssss (6-song EP & .pdf chapbook: coattrack records, 2013)
so. this is a long time coming.and this below is long, so in lieu of reading, if you’d rather not, please, just click the link or image above to look/listen. otherwise, here I go.
——I started writing these songs as early as 2008, and recording them in various bedrooms throughout the years following, moving around the Tower District of Fresno, CA. without a doubt, this was the first real ‘album’ I wrote, recorded, and deemed ‘completed’ as Troubled By Insects; cohesive in tone and content.
I kept it close to my chest for a long time, slightly embarrassed by it, to be honest. soon after recording the bulk of the album (all the city songs sans “Clovis Girls,” which came much later than the rest), I really felt the songs were garbage: poorly recorded, weird and uncomfortable levels, juvenile lyricism. but I burned a few CDs and gave them to a few friends, would play it for people in my car, and always received a positive response. i began listening to more music with the ‘lo-fi aesthetic,’ and slowly began to feel that maybe my sound fit somewhere within the spectrum of noise and rock that I’d been coming to know and love.
after establishing coattrack records I knew this would be my first real, physical release, but I wanted it to be special, inclusive, shared with those who had inspired me and my process. the idea for the chapbook was born, and the response i received was overwhelming in scope and content. my belief in the project and whatever worth it had was restored.
it has been a very long process, but the cassettes are sitting here before me, ready for tape decks near and far. a print version of the chapbook is still in the works, but hopefully (and with a little financial assistance) not far off; however, the work from all my collaborators shines so brightly just in the .pdf chapbook. I am, for once, really proud of this.
those of you who are familiar with the music I’ve been making lately under the moniker Troubled By Insects might find the sound of this surprising, but to a certain extent Girlsssss exists as a historical document, the early incarnation of a voice and a sound that has grown and evolved and continues to do so, daily.
I was lucky to play a few shows with these songs, specifically a show at kuppajoe with extraordinary drummer Steve Darval (there’s video of us performing “L.A.” and “City Girls” and my moustache on YouTube, still), and then, right before leaving Fresno, with a solo set opening for the hugely influential Weatherbox. I truly believe those are the last times I’ll end up playing these songs live, but I’m glad I did, in those moments. the next chapter in my ouvre will probably look and sound much different than this, but I hope you listen and enjoy this for what it is: a culmination of five years of efforts, friendships, shows, shared mp3s, talents, and ideas.
I beg you guys to download and share this work if only to look at the chapbook. The gifts and talents of my friends and associates are so vast and overwhelming.
